The HHSAA Foundation, along with title sponsor The Honolulu Advertiser, will host its annual Hawaii High School Awards Recognition Dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, Sunday, June 3

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association Foundation, along with title sponsor The Honolulu Advertiser, will host its annual Hawaii High School Awards Recognition Dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, Sunday, June 3.  The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner program to follow at 6:00 p.m.

This annual event will honor 12 high school seniors who excel in athletics, academics, and community service via induction into the 25th class of the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor.  Selected by a statewide committee of high school administrators, athletic directors, and the media, these high school honorees are both deserving and inspiring.

The following will be inducted into the 2007 class:

  • Reece Alnas, Kamehameha-Hawaii (football, basketball, baseball, track & field)
  • Jazzmin Awa-Williams, Konawaena (softball and basketball)
  • Brandon Hardin, Kamehameha-Kapalama (football and track & field)
  • Keisha Kanekoa, Honokaa (cross country, softball, and basketball)
  • June Ann Lusk, Baldwin (cross country, softball, and track & field)
  • Spencer McLachlin, Punahou (volleyball and basketball)
  • Ashley Medcalf, Christian Academy (volleyball, soccer, and basketball)
  • Randolyn “Hoku” Nohara, Kamehameha-Kapalama (softball, wrestling, and judo)

  • Keone Reyes, Kaimuki (football and basketball)
  • Scott Smith, Saint Louis School (football and basketball)
  • Richard Torres, Kahuku (football, wrestling, and judo)

The keynote speaker for the evening’s program is University of North Carolina Mens Basketball Head Coach, Roy Williams, who led the Tar Heels to this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, and the NCAA Tournament’s East Regional final.  Williams has won two national championships, in 2005 with the Tar Heels and in 2003 with the University of Kansas Jayhawks.  During his 19-year coaching career, Coach Williams has amassed a career record of 524-131 (80.0%), the highest winning percentage among active Division I coaches.

Proceeds raised from this event will go towards the HHSAA’s efforts to support our 33,000+ high school student-athletes across the State, including:

  • Covering the costs to run the 29 state championships (in 18 different sports) held annually throughout the State;
  • Assisting our student-athletes with the ever-increasing interisland travel costs to participate in the various state tournaments; and
  • Helping our student-athletes (and their parents) navigate their way through the college application process, including helping them find the funds to go on to college, whether via scholarships or other financial aid, as well as improving their chances of getting accepted to college via SAT and other preparation courses and workshops.

Tickets for the event may be purchased at the door for a donation of $150 per person.  Only cash or personal checks will be accepted.
